MUNICIPALITY OF LILO-AN

Liloan is a philippine municipality in the province Cebu in Region VII Central Visayas which be­longs to the Visayas group of islands. The municipality Liloan is seated about 14 km east-north-east of province capital Cebu City and about 567 km south-east of Philippine main capital Manila.Liloan (also written as Lilo-an) is a first municipal income class municipality.

The root of Liloan’s name is believed to be coming from nature’s feature of the area. Where Liloan is located, you can find a spot called ‘Silot,’ where are whirlpool appears due to the ebbs and flows of the water from the bay.That whirlpool is called in Cebuano language as ‘lilo.’ The word ‘lilo’ is then added with a suffix ‘an,’ where you can get the word Liloan, meaning “a place where a lilo occurs.”During the Spanish period, “Pueblo de Lilo-an” was a separate municipality from Mandaue, which is now Mandaue City. According to a newspaper, Liloan became a municipality in 1840.Being occupied by Spanish missionaries, the municipality was also believed to be created as a parish in 1845. Thusit celebrated its 150th anniversary in 1995.
Politically, the first mayor of Liloan served from 1845 to 1846. During the Second World War, Liloan had three mayors at the same time – one was an elected mayor, the other was appointed by the Japanese army, and the other one was designated by the guerillas. The Municipality of Liloan is composed of 14 barangays (or ‘barrios’ in Spanish). These are the following:Cabadiangan, Calero, Catarman, Cotcot, Jubay, Lataban, Mulao, Poblacion, San Roque, San Vicente, Santa Cruz, Table, Tayud, and Yati.The barangays are under the jurisdiction of Liloan especially regarding managing political system and governance.

Below, you can find examples of your travel or event.The lighthouse in Liloan which is located at Bagacay Point is one of the municipality’s famous and major landmark. It is said that the original tower was constructed in 1857 under the Spanish supervision.
The one that you can see was built early in the 1900 century, which is believed to be ordered by William Howard Taft, the first governor general of the Philippines during the American occupation. (Taft, later on, became the President of the United States). The current lighthouse is about 22 meters tall and still functioning and recently employing solar energy to support its intended function.In 2004, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines declared Liloan Lighthouse as a national landmark. Known as the “Light of the North”, Liloan, situated in the province of Cebu, is a first class municipality in which the locals also informally call “Metro Cebu”. Liloan has been known for its domestic tourism because of its beaches.
Just north of the city, Liloan does have a few beach resorts that are popular with locals especially on the weekend. Most rent out cottages for the day and enjoy the beach. The beaches here are nothing too crash hot and if you have travelled thousands of miles to see a tropical beach in Cebu, this isn’t the place to be stopping!.Aside from the beach resorts, Liloan’s economic activity also comes from ceramic manufacturing. A number of ceramic manufacturers produce a variety of ceramic items such as pots, bricks and jars.Liloan has some eateries along the Hi-way selling mostly barbeque street food. The weekends the Hi-way is full of lechon pig and chicken (taking advantage of the thousands of locals that travel to the beaches during this time) Liloan also has a branch of Jollibee.
The municipality of Liloan is also home to man-made wonders, rich in culture and historic events. The limestone cave was used as a hiding place during the World War II. This wartime cave is located in Barangay Vicente, where adventure seekers can enter the 30 meter high cave with its fascinating limestone rock formations. Once inside, one can defy the stories done inside the cave, full of unmoving and a cathedral-like silence.

One fetching destination among tourists is the San Fernando El Rey Parish is one of the oldest standing heritage structures in Liloan. It is the only Catholic Church in Cebu facing the west. Locals celebrate its feast every May 29 and 30.One of Liloan’s featured attractions is the Papa Kit’s Marina and Fishing Lagoon, situated in Silot Bay. It is home to fishing activities, a floating restaurant, various water sports such as kayaking, wakeboarding, an adventure of Zipline and wall climbing. Other outdoor activities include the all-terrain vehicle riding and horseback riding.
